Whitney Houston and Dana Bash

Whitney Elizabeth Houston, born 9 August 1963, to an incredibly musical family from Newark New Jersey is the daughter of gospel star Cissy Houston and John Russell Houston Jr. They are also cousins of the singer Dionne Warwick. Her mother and she began to sing professionally together at the New Hope Baptist Church of Newark at the age of 15 years old. They performed the back vocals for Chaka Khan's track in 1978 Im Every Woman. After that, she began to join the backing vocals of Lou Rawls and Jermaine as well as her mom. The singer was first a featured performer for the The New York-based New York Funk band Material. Her vocal quality work earned her the attention of big record labels like Arista who signed her in 1983. Whitney Houston became the top-selling debut record for an artist in 1985. Singles such as The Most Beautiful Love of All, How Can I Tell If You Give Good Love, and the song Saving All My Love were all released off the album. The songs allowed Houston to reach 7 US top tens which were higher than even those of the Beatles. The album debuted in 1987 and sold 25 million copies around the world. The album that followed it in 1987 Whitney which included the hits The Place Do Broken Hearts Go and I Wanna Dance With Somebody built on her success but it was 1992's film The Bodyguard (1992) that made her one of the most successful artists in history. Although her performance in the film and its soundtrack were not well-received but her Dolly Parton cover I Will Always Love You and The Bodyguard album that accompanied it topped charts across the world for months. It was also in 1993 that she was married to Bobby Brown, an ex-New Edition artist and father of the sole child of her marriage, Bobbi Kristina Brown. At this point, her documented addiction to drugs began. By 1996, she had been using drugs on a daily basis.
